Well known for its acclaimed Green Mountains, Vermont offers beautiful
vistas, clear crisp air and unparalleled outdoor experiences. Many of the
best skiing and hiking areas in northern America are found in this nature
lover’s paradise. Okemo Mountain with an elevation of 3300 feet boasts 106 ski trails and 16ski lifts. It is located just 6 miles down Route 103 from the 1828 house. World renowned Killington Mountain, which is even larger than Okemo Mountain is located outside of Burlington and approximately 45 miles from the house. Other ski areas within an hours reach include Stratton Mountain, Bromley Mountain, Ascutney Mountain, Suicide Six in Woodstock, VT. and Dartmouth Ski Way in Hanover, N.H. Stowe, Vermont located about an hour north of the house is home to Mt. Mansfield the highest point in Vermont. This picturesque town also holds the VonTrappe Family Lodge from the famous Sound of Music fame. During the summer months, you won't want to miss Buttlermilk Falls and area lakes. Summer art classes are also available at the nearby art center. Numerous festivals take place in the bucolic mountains. Hiking is a very popular sport as is rock climbing, white water rafting, nighttime star gazing, panning for gold and the occasional sport of spotting a moose in the wilderness! Various golf courses can be found nearby including Gleneagles, Stratton, Taterhill and Okemo. The nearby town of Chester offers a community pool and skateboard park. Interesting day trips from the house include Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Factory, The Vermont Country Store, Cabot Cheese, and the historical renovated town of Grafton. Hildene, the summer retreat for Abraham Lincoln's family is located in nearby Manchester. This impressive 24-room Georgian revival home sits on 412 acres and is open for tours. Another large mansion in Manchester is the Southern Vermont Arts Center on 375 acres. Concerts, classes changing exhibits and special events can be found here throughout the summer months. One
can drive to Montreal, Canada. Although it is about a 3-hour ride, an
ambitious traveler can make a day trip to this lovely Canadian city. |
